This sort of book, in today's market, (if it had been deemed publishable) would have likely brought me a typical mid-list advance of $10,000, payable in two installments: half on signing of the contract, the other half on publication - or approximately on publication - they always delay the money a month or two.
Out of that I would have paid 15% to my agent off the top. So the first check I would have seen would have been in the neighborhood of $4250.
I have taken in more than that as of now, because I am getting all of the "cover price", not eight percent of it (the usual author cut on a paperback).
I never knew authors got only 8%, I wonder how J.K. Rowlings got to billionaire status, not by book royalties that's for sure, the movie deal and merchandizing much be lucrative too.
